    Horizon Devices (Dunlop) Jazz 3

Posted by Pat Balder on Jul 15th 2026

I've been playing some variation of the Jazz 3 for decades. Truthfully, I could make most any Jazz 3 pick work for any gig, show etc. However, sometimes you put a new pick to string and it immediately grabs your ears and hands. This pick is one of those rare picks. On the surface, it shares the identical specs to the Dunlop Ultex Jazz 3 pick. Both are made from premium Ultex, and both are supposedly manufactured from the same mold. But I beg to differ because these HD picks measure in at 1.32 mm thickness on the calipers vs. 1.38 mm for the clear/yellow model. There are 3 other significant differentiators: 1) These HD picks are treated with some sort of matte finish which reduces (nearly eliminates) any click noise on the strings. That is not to say that it adds dullness; it doesn't. What it adds is a very subtle warmth that is not achievable from the standard Ultex Jazz 3 or the Primetone/Petrucci Jazz 3s. The matte finish also contributes to a more comfortable and stable grip between thumb and index. I love both of those other Dunlop picks, and never thought that I needed to consider a different variant, but there ya go. 2) Because of this warmth, these picks are equally musical on acoustic as on electric. For me, it is a rare pick that can do both. 3) It feels as if there is some type of bevel on the HD picks that creates a certain additional speed and smoothness of string release (this may simply be due to the matte finish - I don't know for sure). In summation, if you love the Petruccis, the Primetones, and the standard Ultex Jazz 3s but are wanting a very subtle warmth on top with a touch more butter on the strings, this is your guy.
