Which Snark Tuner Should You Buy? The Complete Buyer's Guide

Snark makes some of the most popular clip-on tuners on the planet — but if you've ever looked at their lineup, you know the problem: there are a dozen models, half of them look nearly identical, and the names (ST-2, ST-8, SST-1, ST-8HPT…) don't tell you much.

The good news is that once you know the four things that actually separate these tuners, choosing becomes easy. This guide walks through every current model, groups them by what really matters, and ends with a simple "pick your Snark" cheat sheet.

The 30-second answer

  • Most accurate: Snark ST-8 HPT or ST-2 HPT ($26.99)
  • Best value classic: Snark ST-8 RE or ST-2 RE ($21.99)
  • Smallest / most discreet: Snark AIR-1 ($29.99) or CLT-1 "Crazy Little Thing" ($21.99)
  • Best bundle (case + cloth included): Snark SST-1 ($24.99)
  • Cheapest reliable Snark: Snark X ($19.99)
  • Dedicated ukulele tuner: Snark SN-6X ($19.99)
  • Guitar/bass/violin classic: Snark SN-5X ($19.99)
  • Prefer swappable batteries over recharging: the new SNG1 (coming soon)

First, the big shift: Snark is now (almost) all rechargeable

For years Snark tuners ran on a coin-cell battery (the CR2032). Over the last few product cycles, the entire core lineup has moved to built-in USB-rechargeable batteries. One quick charge lasts weeks to months of normal use, and there's no little battery to hunt down when it dies mid-set.

Every model in this guide except one is rechargeable. The exception is the brand-new SNG1, which brings back a replaceable-battery design — handy if you'd rather carry a spare battery than a charging cable. (More on that below.)

The 4 things that actually separate Snark tuners

Ignore the model numbers for a second. Every Snark decision comes down to these:

1. Precision tier — how "tight" the in-tune window is. Snark's newest HPT ("High Precision Tuners") models use upgraded processing and a tighter in-tune window for pinpoint accuracy. The "Super Tight" models sit just below that. The classic models are still plenty accurate for everyday playing.

2. Sound shield — does it block room noise? Higher-end Snarks have a patented anechoic "sound shield" on the back that blocks ambient noise and stray vibrations, so you tune faster and more reliably on a loud stage or in a busy room.

3. Size & visibility. Some Snarks have a big, bright, stage-readable display. Others are built to disappear — the AIR-1 hides behind your headstock, and the CLT-1 is about the size of a guitar pick.

4. Color & instrument focus. Most current Snarks are chromatic all-instrument tuners (guitar, bass, ukulele, mandolin, violin, and more). The main visible difference between "ST-2" and "ST-8" style bodies is color and display style — ST-2 is the classic red all-instrument body with a built-in mic; ST-8 is the black "Super Tight" body with a big, bright display.

The lineup, grouped by what matters

Tier 1 — High Precision (HPT): the flagships

The newest and most accurate Snarks. Upgraded processor, ultra-tight in-tune window, anechoic sound shield, and both mic + vibration modes. Buy these if you want the best tuning Snark makes.

ST-2 HPT (Red) $26.99 Multi-instrumentalists Same high-precision engine in the all-instrument red body with Mic / Vibration modes.

Buy HPT if: you play live, record, do setups, or you're just particular about being perfectly in tune.

Tier 2 — "Super Tight" & Sound-Shield models

The step below HPT: a sound shield for noisy rooms and a bright display, at a friendlier price.

Model Price Best for The one-liner
ST-8 RE (Black) $21.99 Everyday use, best value The classic Super Tight rechargeable — big display, hugely popular.
ST-2 RE (Red) $21.99 All instruments Super Tight rechargeable in the all-instrument red body.

Tier 4 — Compact & discreet

For players who don't want a tuner sticking off their headstock.

Model Price Best for The one-liner
AIR-1 $29.99 Minimalists Low-profile design that hides behind your headstock — tunes fast, recharges quick.
CLT-1 "Crazy Little Thing" $21.99 Discreet + precise Pick-sized micro tuner, ultra-bright rotating LED, USB-C charging.

Buy Tier 4 if: stage look matters, or you want a tuner that basically disappears.

Playing ukulele, violin, or mandolin?

Every chromatic Snark in this guide will tune a ukulele, violin, mandolin, or banjo — but a couple of picks stand out:

  • Ukulele players: the SN-6X ($19.99) is Snark's dedicated chromatic ukulele tuner.
  • Violin players: the SN-5X ($19.99) tunes guitar, bass, and violin — or grab the rechargeable Snark X if you'd rather charge than swap a battery.
  • Mandolin, banjo & everything else: any of the all-instrument models — ST-2 HPT, ST-2 RE, or SN-RE — will handle it.

Coming soon — SNG1 (the battery-powered one)

The upcoming SNG1 goes the other direction from the rest of the lineup: it's battery-operated with a replaceable cell instead of built-in recharging. If you prefer swapping in a fresh battery over remembering to charge — or you want a spare-in-the-gig-bag setup — this is the one to watch. (We'll update this guide with full specs at launch.)

Frequently asked questions

Are all Snark tuners chromatic? Yes — the models in this guide are chromatic, so they'll tune guitar, bass, ukulele, mandolin, violin, and more, not just standard tuning.

How long does the rechargeable battery last? Snark rates a full charge at weeks to months of normal use. They charge over USB (USB-C on newer models like the CLT-1).

What's the difference between the ST-2 and the ST-8? Mostly color and display style: the ST-2 is the classic red all-instrument body with a built-in mic, and the ST-8 is the black "Super Tight" body with a big, bright display. Both are chromatic, and both come in a higher-precision HPT version.

What does "HPT" mean? "High Precision Tuner" — Snark's newest models with upgraded processing, a tighter in-tune window, and an anechoic sound shield for faster, more accurate tuning.

Is there a Snark tuner made for ukulele? Yes — the SN-6X is Snark's dedicated ukulele tuner. That said, every chromatic Snark in this guide (the ST-2, SN-RE, and others) will tune a ukulele too.

Which Snark tunes a violin? Both the SN-5X and the rechargeable Snark X tune guitar, bass, and violin — either one works for violinists.

Rechargeable or battery — which is better? Rechargeable means nothing to buy or lose, but you have to charge it. A replaceable-battery model (the upcoming SNG1) lets you carry a spare and swap instantly. Pick based on your habits.

Which Snark tuner is the most accurate? The High Precision (HPT) models are the most accurate Snark tuners: the ST-8 HPT and the all-instrument ST-2 HPT. They use upgraded processing, an ultra-tight in-tune window, and an anechoic sound shield.

What is the smallest Snark clip-on tuner? The most compact Snark tuners are the AIR-1, which is low-profile enough to hide behind your headstock, and the CLT-1 Crazy Little Thing, a micro tuner roughly the size of a guitar pick.
